The avoidant attachment style helps people avoid possible danger. By isolating themselves or avoiding too close a connection, they are less likely to be hurt. However, in doing so, their own needs for closeness are suppressed, which can also lead to negative feelings. People with an avoidant attachment style may withdraw even further when they sense vulnerability, both in themselves and in others.

**What helps with an avoidant attachment style?**

- When you notice that you are "running away": Look inwards and notice your feelings.
- Communicate your feelings with your partner
- Refocus on your relationship and ask yourself what your partner is feeling, thinking, or needing.
- Build a circle of people with whom you can discuss your problems openly and honestly.
- Practice mindfulness: when do you start to withdraw?
- Try to "practise intimacy - that is, physical and emotional closeness to other people". This may sound difficult at first, but it gets easier with time!
