**When we manage to be authentic, we enjoy higher self-esteem, deeper satisfaction and more empathy. At the same time, we lower our stress levels, avoid anxiety, and can alleviate depressive moods. There's no question about it: our relationships benefit, too.**

Authenticity in relationships creates trust. Being authentic with your partner creates the basis for intimacy, openness and appreciative communication. Because when we are authentic, we are in tune with our needs and feelings and can communicate them appropriately to our counterpart.

The following tips can help you bring authenticity to your relationship.

### 1. talk about needs and feelings

When you share your [needs](https://app.hellodearest.io/article/check-in-are-you-neglecting-your-needs) and feelings with your significant other, you are sharing what is going on inside of you. This does not mean that you have to share every thought and feeling with the other person. But if you are feeling anxious, sad, happy, or even angry, and you share that with the other person, it frees him or her to respond appropriately.

### 2. listening

Listening to the other person and paying attention to what the other person is saying creates the opportunity to be authentic in the first place. Perhaps your partner is trying to tell you something that you can only grasp if you listen very carefully. This includes paying attention to the gestures and facial expressions of your counterpart. Maybe everyday stories are hiding clues to how your partner is really feeling.

### 3. define couple identity

Become aware of what it means to you to be a couple. You may have different couple identities; as lovers, in a business relationship, as parents, but also as individuals. If you manage to be aware of this, it will help you to orient yourself to it in difficult situations.

### 4. set and respect boundaries

Everyone has their boundaries. Both emotional, sexual, physical and also psychological. When you know your boundaries and communicate them to the other person, you show something of yourself and practice being authentic. ### 5. Take pressure out of the relationship

An important prerequisite for authenticity in relationships is to meet others in a way that neither deceives nor exploits them. This also means not making demands on the other:n that may not be possible to meet. Because if our partner has to bend in order to meet our wishes or ideas, this takes away the possibility of being authentic. This has a negative effect on mental health and therefore on the relationship.
